Pole
Pole is the recording name of German producer and mastering engineer Stefan Betke, born in Düsseldorf in 1967. He works in dub, electronic music, electronica, glitch, IDM and microsound, and is associated with minimal electronic production built from reduced, highly detailed sound design.
Background and approach
The Pole project begins in 1996 after Betke accidentally drops a Waldorf 4-Pole filter, which becomes damaged and starts producing irregular crackles and clicks. He turns this accident into a defining part of his sound. His work develops around minimal dub textures and tightly controlled arrangements, with an emphasis on reducing tracks to their essential elements.
Betke’s broader role in music extends beyond his own recordings. He works as a remixer, DJ, musician, mastering engineer, promoter, studio owner and producer. He also runs a music publishing company, ~scape publishing, and the label ~scape, which he founds in 1999 with Barbara Preisinger.
Releases and style
Betke releases early Pole albums under simple colour titles: blue in 1997, red in 1999 and yellow in 2000. These titles reflect his interest in keeping attention on the music itself rather than on presentation. His later series, including 45/45, 90/90 and Pole, combines two EPs into album-length releases and links his newer work back to his earlier ideas.
The music on these releases remains rooted in dub and computer-arranged sound design, but later material moves further towards hip hop, becoming more organic, percussive and funky. The album Pole also includes vocals from Ohio rapper Fat Jon, the first time a voice enters the mix in this project.
Other work
Betke remixes artists ranging from Egoexpress to Depeche Mode and produces acts including Barbara Morgenstern. As a DJ, he has performed in clubs, on radio and at festivals, using setups that have included turntables, CD players and a laptop, and later a more conventional arrangement built around experimental hip hop and electronica. He is based in Berlin.
