Pogo is the stage name of Nick Bertke, a producer from Cape Town, Australia. He is based in Perth, Western Australia and begins releasing music in 2007.

Style and approach

Pogo makes electronic music built largely from sampled sounds taken from films and individual scenes, arranging them into new pieces. His work is associated with plunderphonics and draws on several related electronic styles, including ambient house, deep house, downtempo, glitch hop and IDM. Some tracks consist almost entirely of the source sounds he samples, with little or no additional instrumentation.

Samples and releases

He creates tracks from films including Alice in Wonderland, Up, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Sword in the Stone, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Toy Story. Many of these tracks appear with accompanying videos on his official YouTube channel.

Legal issues and later work

Bertke's use of film audio and imagery leads to disputes with film companies. His track “Bangarang”, which uses footage and sound from Steven Spielberg's Hook, is removed from YouTube after a complaint from Sony Pictures Entertainment and later restored. Similar complaints from Walt Disney Motion Picture Studios lead to some Disney-related videos being set to private, although they later return online after a period in which Bertke works under contract for Disney. He later appears to shift his attention mainly toward photography and film rather than music.

Other activity

He is also loosely connected with the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Perth, where he does video work and appears in a video about its creative ministries.
