Plebe Rude
Plebe Rude is a Brazilian punk rock band formed in Brasília in 1981. The group begins with Phillipe Seabra on vocals and guitar, Jander Ribeiro “Ameba” on vocals and guitar, André Mueller “X” on bass, and Gutje Fortman on drums. Its sound is shaped by British and American punk acts including The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, Buzzcocks and Ramones.
Recording history
The band’s debut album, O Concreto Já Rachou, appears in 1985 and sells more than 250,000 copies, helping establish Plebe Rude as one of the better-known names in Brazilian rock in the 1980s. It follows with Nunca Fomos Tão Brasileiros in 1987 and the self-titled Plebe Rude in 1989. After those releases, EMI ends its contract with the band.
Ameba leaves soon afterwards because of tensions within the group. Gutje Fortman later also leaves after performing in the early 1990s with Clash City Rockers, a Clash tribute band. Seabra and André X continue as a duo and release the independent album Mais Raiva Do Que Medo in 1993 before going separate ways in 1994.
Later activity
A box set containing the first three albums appears in 1997, followed by the compilation Preferência Nacional in 1998. Those releases lead to renewed performances, and the band issues the live album Enquanto a Trégua Não Vem in 2000.
In 2004, Seabra and André X announce that Plebe Rude is returning to professional performance and recording. The line-up expands to include Clemente from Inocentes on vocals and guitar and drummer Txotxa, formerly of Maskavo. The band then releases R ao Contrário, its fifth studio album and the first with this formation, in 2006.
