Phoebe Bridgers

Phoebe Bridgers is an American singer-songwriter and record producer from Pasadena, California. Born in 1994, she begins performing at a young age, plays guitar from her early teens, and later studies vocal jazz at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. She also attends Berklee College of Music briefly before leaving after orientation.

Early work and debut album

In her early career, Bridgers performs as a solo artist in Los Angeles and plays in local bands including Einstein's Dirty Secret and Sloppy Jane. She records her early EP Killer through PAX AM after meeting Ryan Adams. Tony Berg later works with her on her debut album, Stranger in the Alps, which is released in 2017 on Dead Oceans. The album features contributions from Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis and establishes her as a notable figure in indie folk and contemporary indie music.

Style and releases

Bridgers' music is associated with indie folk, alternative folk, chamber pop, contemporary folk, and indie rock. It combines acoustic instrumentation, electronic production, and introspective lyrics. Her second album, Punisher, is released in 2020 on Dead Oceans and includes the single “I Know the End”. She also releases the singles “Smoke Signals”, “Garden Song”, and “Kyoto”, along with various cover versions and charity recordings.

Band projects and collaborations

Bridgers is a member of Boygenius with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, and of Better Oblivion Community Center with Conor Oberst. Boygenius releases the EP Boygenius, the album The Record, and the EP The Rest. Better Oblivion Community Center releases a self-titled album in 2019. Bridgers also appears with or on recordings by Taylor Swift, The 1975, SZA, Kid Cudi, Lord Huron, Fiona Apple, Matt Berninger, Andrew Bird, Manchester Orchestra, Maggie Rogers, Christian Lee Hutson, Shame, The National, Lorde, Muna, Noah Gundersen, and Marcus Mumford.

Labels, awards and other work

Bridgers releases music through Dead Oceans and Pax Americana Record Company, and later founds Saddest Factory, an imprint of Dead Oceans. She receives multiple Grammy Awards and nominations, including nominations at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards and a Grammy Award for her collaboration with SZA on “Ghost in the Machine”. She also contributes music to television and film, including “Sidelines” for Conversations with Friends and music for Minions: The Rise of Gru.
