Philip Jeck is an English multimedia composer and choreographer from Liverpool, born in Cambridge in 1952 and active in experimental electronic music, free improvisation and turntablism. He studies Visual Arts at Dartington College of Arts in Devon and begins working with record players and electronics in the early 1980s.

Work with turntables and records

Jeck becomes known for pieces built from turntables, vinyl and electronics. His best-known project is Vinyl Requiem, made with Lol Sargent, a performance using 180 Dansette record players, 12 slide-projectors and 2 movie-projectors. This work wins the Time Out Performance Award in 1993. He also performs versions of his turntable pieces internationally, including a 2007 performance of Vinyl Coda I-III in Bangkok as part of the Bangkok International Art Festival.

Recordings and labels

Jeck is signed to the UK label Touch. His tracks also appear on releases from Blast First, including the Deconstruct compilation, and from The Soundworks Exchange on First Edition.

Collaborations and performance work

He works extensively with choreographer Laurie Booth and is a member of Slant. He also composes and performs scores for dance and theatre companies including Anatomy Performance Co., Yolande Snaith Theatre-dance, Movie'n'Opera in Vienna, Laurie Booth and Steve Paxton. His music also appears in the dance films Beyond Zero for Channel 4 and Pace for BBC 2.

International performances and workshops

Jeck gives solo performances throughout Europe, Japan and the USA. He also runs workshops, including a session at the School of Audio Engineering in Bangkok organised by the British Council.

Death

Philip Jeck dies in 2022.
