Peter Bouncer, also known as Peter Alexander McKenzie and P. Naphtali, is a UK-born reggae, dub, dancehall and hardcore artist. He takes his stage name from earlier work in nightclub security. He is first associated with reggae and dancehall, and is a popular dancehall DJ with Unity Sounds.
Career
Peter Bouncer first reaches a wider audience through Shut Up And Dance’s “Ravin’ I’m Ravin’”, which becomes a UK number 2 hit in 1992. After that, he releases his solo debut in a harder direction with “So Here I Come”, moving into unrelenting hardcore rather than his earlier reggae and dancehall style.
Style and reception
His work combines reggae, dub, dancehall and hardcore influences. In coverage at the time, he is described as the “Sinatra of hardcore”, reflecting both the force of his image and the contrast between his soulful voice and the dense hardcore backing.
Background
Before recording, he is strongly committed to reggae and builds a profile as a dancehall DJ. Despite his reputation, he does not establish a large audience in hardcore or in his other styles.
