Penetration

Penetration is a British punk and new wave group from County Durham, originally formed in late 1976 in Ferryhill, near Durham, England. The original line-up consists of Pauline Murray on vocals, Gary Chaplin on guitar, Robert Blamire on bass and Gary Smallman on drums.

Early releases and line-up changes

The band’s first single is “Don’t Dictate”, released in November 1977. Gary Chaplin later leaves the group and is replaced by Neale Floyd, who debuts on “Firing Squad” in May 1978. Fred Purser then joins on guitar for “Life’s A Gamble” and for the album Moving Targets, both released in October 1978; the album appears on limited edition glow-in-the-dark luminous vinyl.

Penetration continues with “Danger Signs” in April 1979 and “Come Into the Open” in August 1979, which is taken from the album Coming Up for Air, released in September 1979.

Split and later work

Musical differences and the pressure of fame lead to the band splitting in October 1979. After this, Pauline Murray and Robert Blamire form Pauline Murray and The Invisible Girls, while Fred Purser joins Tygers of Pan Tang, reflecting his move towards heavier rock.
