Paul SG is an Austrian drum and bass producer, also known as Paul Biegel. He works with The Jazzassins and is based in Vienna, Austria.

Background

He develops an early interest in music through his parents, including a father who plays flute. He takes part in musical education for children from the age of five, and begins drumming after repeatedly hitting kitchen utensils, which leads to his father buying him a drum kit. He describes this as the start of a lifelong focus on rhythm.

Musical development

His background as a drummer shapes his production style. He plays in bands across rock, punk, grunge, funk, blues and gospel, and also plays kettledrum in a classical orchestra. This range of experience feeds into his approach to drum and bass.

Career

Paul SG is closely associated with LTJ Bukem and Goodlooking Records, with which he works for half a decade. He says this period teaches him professional discipline and attention to detail, and he later applies those values to his own label, Jazzsticks Recordings.
