Pansy Division
Pansy Division is a San Francisco punk band formed in 1991. The group is associated with queercore, and their style spans indie rock, pop punk, power pop, punk and punk rock. They remain active and continue to perform live.
Career
The band is often credited with helping to popularise the queercore movement. A key part of that reputation comes from opening for Green Day on the Dookie tour in 1994, when Green Day were also a Bay Area band and former Lookout! Records artists.
Pansy Division begins releasing records in the early 1990s. Their first single release is the Fem in a Black Leather Jacket EP, issued on Lookout! Records in 1992. Later albums include Wish I’d Taken Pictures in 1996, Absurd Pop Song Romance in 1998, and Quite Contrary in 2016. The band records around a dozen drummers over its history, with most of those changes taking place in its first three years.
Reception and later years
The group’s record sales decline through the late 1990s and 2000s, with Absurd Pop Song Romance selling significantly fewer copies than Wish I’d Taken Pictures. Their profile rises again in part because of the queercore revival that develops in the mid-2010s.
