Oxbow
Oxbow is an experimental rock band from San Francisco, United States, active from 1988 to 2024. The group is associated with noise rock, experimental rock and progressive stoner rock, and is also described as an avant-garde act. Its line-up includes Niko Wenner, Eugene Robinson, Tom Dobrov, Greg Davis and Dan Adams. Former drummer Tom Dobrov is part of the band’s early history, and the group’s final line-up features Eugene S. Robinson on vocals and lyrics, Wenner on guitars and keyboards, Adams on bass guitar, and Davis on drums and percussion.
Style and sound
The band develops a harsh and experimental approach to noise rock, drawing on avant-garde jazz, musique concrète and blues. Its music is described as creating tense and unsettling soundscapes, with vocal delivery centred on Eugene Robinson’s high-pitched, anguished style.
Career
Oxbow forms in 1988 in San Francisco and releases its first album, Fuckfest, in 1989. That record combines elements associated with The Birthday Party, free jazz and musique concrète and builds the band a small but devoted following. King of the Jews follows in 1992 and features guest vocals from Lydia Lunch. The band then releases The Balls in the Great Meat Grinder Collection and, after Let Me Be a Woman in 1995, signs to SST for Serenade in Red in 1997. Both of those albums are produced by Steve Albini, and Serenade in Red includes guest vocals from Marianne Faithfull.
Later releases include a split EP with the Italian band White Tornado in 1999, An Evil Heat in 2002, the compilation Love That's Last: A Wholly Hypnographic and Disturbing Work Regarding Oxbow in 2006, The Narcotic Story in 2007, Songs for the French in 2009, and Thin Black Duke in 2017. In 2022 the band releases the live album An Eternal Reminder of Not Today - Live at Moers, a collaboration with free jazz musician Peter Brötzmann. Its eighth and final album, Love's Holiday, appears in 2023. Eugene Robinson leaves Oxbow in 2024.
