Overkill

Overkill is a thrash metal band from Old Bridge Township, United States, active since 1980 and fronted by Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth. The group forms part of the East Coast thrash scene and is associated with bands such as Nuclear Assault and Anthrax. Their sound draws on punk rock and the new wave of British heavy metal, and their line-up changes frequently over the years, with D. D. Verni and Ellsworth the only original members.

Early years and development

The band grows out of the New Jersey punk group the Lubricunts, with Verni and drummer Rat Skates among the founding members. Early line-ups also include guitarist Robert Pisarek and Ellsworth on vocals. In its first period, the group plays cover versions of songs by punk and metal artists including the Ramones, Motörhead and Judas Priest before moving to original material. By the early 1980s, it establishes a following in clubs in New York and New Jersey.

Its 1983 demo, Power in Black, circulates widely through underground tape trading and leads to compilation appearances and a recording deal with Megaforce Records. The debut album, Feel the Fire, appears in 1985 and is followed by touring in Europe and North America.

Major-label years and 1980s releases

Overkill is among the early thrash bands to sign with a major label, joining Atlantic Records in 1986. Its second album, Taking Over (1987), brings the band its first chart success and includes the song “In Union We Stand”, which receives airplay. That year it also releases the EP !!!Fuck You!!! and loses drummer Rat Skates.

The band follows with Under the Influence (1988), then The Years of Decay (1989), which features longer songs such as “Elimination” and broadens its audience. After the supporting tour, guitarist Bobby Gustafson leaves and is replaced by Rob Cannavino and Merritt Gant.

1990s line-up changes and style shifts

Horrorscope (1991) presents a heavier sound and is followed by more touring. Drummer Bob “Sid” Falck leaves after the tour and Tim Mallare joins. On I Hear Black (1993), the band experiments with a more traditional heavy metal and rock influence, then returns to a faster thrash approach on W.F.O. (1994).

After leaving Atlantic Records in 1995, Overkill releases the live album Wrecking Your Neck. Later 1990s releases include The Killing Kind (1996), From the Underground and Below (1997) and Necroshine (1999), which combine several stylistic elements with a thrash base. The cover album Coverkill also appears in 1999. During this period, Ellsworth undergoes treatment for cancer and returns to recording and touring.

2000s onward

In the 2000s the band जारी to record and tour internationally, with albums including Bloodletting (2000), Killbox 13 (2003) and ReliXIV (2005), plus live releases such as Wrecking Everything. Ron Lipnicki joins on drums. Immortalis (2007) includes guest musicians and continues the band’s established style.

Ironbound (2010) renews attention for the band and enters the Billboard 200. The Electric Age (2012) reaches their highest chart position at that point, and White Devil Armory (2014) becomes their highest-charting US album. The Grinding Wheel follows in 2017. Jason Bittner joins in 2017.

Later releases include The Wings of War (2019) and Scorched (2023). Bittner leaves in 2024 and Jeramie Kling replaces him. Overkill continues touring and working on new material.

Style and imagery

Overkill’s music stays rooted in thrash metal, with speed metal and heavy metal also part of its classification. The band uses a recurring mascot, “Chaly”, a skeletal bat-like figure that appears on many of its releases. It releases more than twenty studio albums and sells millions of records worldwide.
