Orlando le Fleming
Orlando le Fleming is a British jazz bassist from Birmingham, England, born in 1976. Both of his parents are professional musicians: his mother is a cellist and his father is a composer. He first aims to become a professional cricketer and plays for five years in the minor counties before changing direction and pursuing music after being offered a place at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Career in the UK
After studying in London, he establishes himself as one of the UK’s prominent bass players and tours and records with Jason Rebello, Julian Joseph, Iain Ballamy, Tommy Smith, Jean Toussaint and Guy Barker. Based in Europe, he also performs and tours with visiting American jazz musicians including Bill Charlap, Art Farmer, George Coleman, Dave Liebman, Joey Calderazzo and Branford Marsalis.
Move to New York and later work
He moves to New York in 2003 and joins Jane Monheit’s band for three years. He also tours and records with Billy Cobham’s project The Art of Five and appears on Jimmy Cobb’s Marsalis Music Honors album. He later tours and records with Seamus Blake, Ari Hoenig, Will Vinson, Lage Lund, Joey Calderazzo and Jeff “Tain” Watts, and is a member of the David Sanchez quartet. He is also a member of OWL Trio and Anorak.
As a bandleader
His debut release as a leader is From Brooklyn With Love, which features Antonio Sanchez on drums and presents his work as a composer.
