Oren Ambarchi

Oren Ambarchi is an electronic guitarist and percussionist from Sydney, Australia. He is based in Melbourne and has performed live since 1986. His work centres on the tonal possibilities of the guitar and is usually made without using a computer.

Style and approach

His music often uses drones and loops, which he shapes into intricate, atmospheric pieces with very subtle melodies. It is associated with experimental electronic music, free improvisation, ambient textures and minimalism.

Collaborations and groups

Ambarchi works with a wide range of experimental musicians, including Keith Rowe, Günter Müller, Robbie Avenaim, Voicecrack, Brendan Walls, Pimmon and Otomo Yoshihide. He is also part of several groups, including Sunn O))), Sun, Menstruation Sisters, Gravetemple, Burial Chamber Trio, 4g, Nazoranai and Ash Ra Tempel Experience.

Releases and labels

His recordings appear on labels including Touch, Headz, Southern Lord, Idea, Tigerbeat6 and Black Truffle. He also releases some of his own music under the name Jerker Productions.

Recognition

His 2003 record Triste receives an honourable mention at the Prix Ars Electronica.
