Orchestra Of Spheres is a New Zealand psychedelic group from Wellington. The band forms in 2009 and becomes known for live shows that combine unusual visuals with a dense, ecstatic sound rooted in psychedelic pop and psychedelic rock.

Style and instrumentation

The group’s sound brings together machine-like drumming, synths, intricate bass lines and psychedelic guitar work, with chanted vocals adding a trance-like quality to many tracks. The band also uses homemade and unconventional instruments, including the sexomouse marimba and electric gamelan, which become part of its distinctive approach.

The group includes Riki Gooch and Issac Smith, and the broader lineup mentioned in relation to its recordings and performances includes Jemi Hemi Mandala, Mos Iocos, EtonalE and Baba Rossa.

Recordings and releases

Orchestra Of Spheres releases a second full-length album titled Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music. The album is recorded in Italy in September 2012 during a European tour and is tracked onto 24-track tape at Outside Inside Studio in Montebelluna, Italy. It is also described as the first time the band records in a real studio. The record is mixed by Mojo Matt Bordin, and its cover features artwork by New Zealand artist Kerry Ann Lee.

The album includes the crowd favourite Mind Over Might. The recording process is notable for its fast, live approach, with the band reportedly completing songs in one or two takes.

Touring and live reputation

The band builds a following through energetic, visually striking performances and tours extensively in Europe. After recording in Italy, part of the group’s gear is stolen from the back of its tour van in Poland, and the text notes that the band’s instruments remain in suburban Krakow. The group also has shows booked across the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Italy.
