Om Unit is the alias of UK producer and DJ Jim Coles. He first appears under the name 2Tall, where he works in UK hip-hop, scratch culture and turntablism in the mid-2000s. His DJ record includes being a DMC Finalist.
As Om Unit, Coles releases on Terrorhythm, Stretched and All City Records before establishing a wider profile through drum and bass, dubstep and related bass music forms. His work also includes the Phillip D Kick alias, under which he releases jungle and footwork-influenced tracks built around 160 BPM rhythms and a UK junglist approach. That project gains attention for its reworkings of tracks by Adam F, Remarc and LTJ Bukem, then ends after eight months, with the downloads left available online.
Cosmic Bridge
Coles runs Cosmic Bridge Records, which issues music rooted in grimey, fractured dub and moving across a broad tempo range. The label’s output draws on dubstep, hip-hop, jungle and footwork, and includes releases by Kromestar, Boxcutter, Moresounds and Ean, alongside other close collaborators and newer names such as Danny Scrilla.
Om Unit’s own catalogue is described as prolific, with nine EPs released across two years and a nine-track Cosmology sampler assembled from material that would otherwise sit unused. Coles also refers to his album Threads as part of the period when listeners begin to associate him with drum and bass work as well as label curation.
