Ollie King is a melodeon player and singer based in Sheffield whose music draws on the customs and traditions of England. He performs English folk and traditional material, and is known for using vintage Hohner instruments throughout his playing; these are maintained and modified by Mike Rowbotham, which gives his sound a distinct character.

Career

King becomes a New Roots finalist in 2011 and performs widely across the country. He also appears on releases by Megson and The Young’uns. In 2013, he is selected by the English Folk Dance and Song Society for its Aspire Programme, an artistic development scheme.

Collaborations

His work includes collaborations with BBC Young Folk Award winner James Findlay, both as a duo and in a vocal trio with traditional singer Rosie Hood. He also appears alongside Fay Hield and Sam Sweeney, as well as Findlay and Hood, on his first solo album.

Solo work

King’s debut solo album, Gambit, is recorded and produced by Andy Bell, whose credits include Bellowhead, Spiers & Boden and Fay Hield. The album artwork is by Elly Lucas.
