Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo is an American singer-songwriter and actress from Murrieta, California. Born in 2003, she grows up in Temecula and begins her career as a child performer. She is of Filipino American heritage through her father’s family, while her mother has German and Irish ancestry. She is an only child and is born with partial hearing loss in her left ear.

Early acting career

Rodrigo first appears in a 2010 Old Navy commercial. She makes her acting debut in the direct-to-video film An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success in 2015, playing Grace Thomas. In 2016, she moves to Los Angeles after being cast as Paige Olvera in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark, a role she plays for three seasons. From 2019 to 2022, she stars as Nini Salazar-Roberts in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. During that period, she also contributes songs to the series, including “All I Want”. She leaves the show after its third season to focus on music.

Music career

Rodrigo signs with Geffen Records in 2020 and transitions to music as a singer-songwriter. Her debut single, “Drivers License”, is co-written with producer Dan Nigro and becomes a major international hit, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching the top spot in several other countries. “Deja Vu” follows in 2021 and reaches the US top ten, while “Good 4 U” becomes her second number-one single in the United States. Her debut album, Sour, is released in 2021, tops the Billboard 200 for five weeks, and reaches number one in several international charts. The album is supported by the Sour Tour, which runs across North America and Europe.

Rodrigo’s second album, Guts, is released in 2023 and also debuts at number one on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, “Vampire”, becomes her third Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, and “Bad Idea Right?” reaches the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The song “Can’t Catch Me Now”, written for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, receives the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Song in a Sci-Fi, Fantasy or Horror Film. A deluxe edition, Guts (Spilled), follows in 2024. Her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, is released in 2026 and also reaches number one on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart. Its lead single, “Drop Dead”, debuts at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Rodrigo becomes the first artist to have the lead single from each of her first three studio albums debut at number one on that chart.

Live work and film projects

Rodrigo releases the concert film Sour Prom on YouTube in 2021 and the documentary film Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U in 2022. She later releases Olivia Rodrigo: Guts World Tour on Netflix in 2024. She tours in support of Guts from 2024 to 2025 with dates in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. She also appears at festivals including Coachella, Governors Ball, BST Hyde Park, Glastonbury Festival and Lollapalooza Chicago, and performs with artists including No Doubt, Robert Smith of the Cure, Weezer and Feist. She appears in the documentary Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery – The Untold Story in 2025.

Style, influences and recognition

Rodrigo’s music is associated with pop, pop rock, indie pop, folk pop, pop punk, power pop and musical theatre influences. She grows up listening to alternative rock acts including No Doubt, Pearl Jam, the White Stripes and Green Day, and says that Taylor Swift’s country songwriting interests her in writing songs. Her awards include three Grammy Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards and seven Billboard Music Awards. She is named Time’s Entertainer of the Year in 2021, Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2022, and ASCAP’s Pop Music Songwriter of the Year in 2022 and 2024.

Other work

Rodrigo appears as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 2026, performing “Drop Dead” and debuting “Begged”. She also announces Daisy Chain Fields, an all-female music festival in Irvine, California, with proceeds supporting charities for women and girls.
