Oliver Coates is a UK cellist and solo artist working across experimental, electronic, modern classical and ambient music. He gives solo performances and recitals internationally, including in China, Russia, Brazil and across Europe, and he also performs as a principal cellist with several leading British orchestras.

Career

Coates is known for collaborating with musicians across a wide range of genres. He appears as principal cellist with Aurora Orchestra and the London Contemporary Orchestra, and also takes guest spots with London Sinfonietta, Britten Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.

Alongside orchestral work, he performs solo at festivals and concert series around the world. He is an Artist in Residence at Southbank Centre in London.

Recordings

His first full-length solo album, Towards the blessed islands, is released on PRAH Records. It is the first release on an imprint set up for abstract contemporary and experimental music by Stephen Bass, who heads Moshi Moshi Records.

Awards

Coates receives the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award in 2011.
