okvsho

okvsho is a Zurich-based duo made up of brothers Christoph Kiss and Georg Kiss. The group works across contemporary jazz, electronic music, funk, hip hop and house, and its sound also draws on ambient, beatmaking, neosoul and jazz traditions.

Background

The two brothers grow up in Zurich and begin making music at a young age in Brazilian percussion groups. Their background also includes Hungarian family roots, which connect them to traditional Balkan music. Their musical references range from oldschool beatmaking and house and electronic music to the modern jazz scene, funk and neosoul.

Releases and development

okvsho first attracts wider attention with the Traphouse Jazz EP in 2018 and the debut album Kamala’s Danz in 2020, both released via Boyoom Connective. Their work appears in Bandcamp Weekly, on NTS Radio and on the Spotify playlist State of Jazz. The duo moves from sample-based bedroom production and loop-led tracks towards self-composed songs, while also performing with local jazz musicians in a live-band setting.

Style and later work

The group’s live project presents jazz as dance music, with driving rhythms and added instrumentation. Their Orange Wine EP, issued on the record label Hip Dozer, continues their mix of beatmaking and improvised jazz elements, alongside tropical drums and dance-oriented grooves. Their approach combines simple production ideas with layered and rhythmic jazz forms, and the material is associated with the modern jazz and jazzy house scene.
