Oh Land is the stage name of Nanna Øland Fabricius, a Danish singer-songwriter and record producer from Copenhagen. Born in 1985, she begins her career after a training path in ballet is cut short by a slipped disc and spinal fracture, which leads her to turn fully to music.

Career

Oh Land’s background combines classical and experimental influences. Her mother is an opera singer and her father is an organist, and she grows up with Björk’s Homogenic on constant rotation. She studies at the Danish Royal Ballet Academy before her injury ends her dancing career. Her music reflects that mix of influences, with a sound described through lavish, symphonic and percussive electronic textures, and she says she aims for music that sounds futuristic while still feeling familiar.

Releases and collaborators

Her debut album, Fauna, comes out in Denmark in 2008 on the independent label Fake Diamond Records. Kasper Bjørke discovers her and releases the record. She later moves to Brooklyn, New York, where she works with Dan Carey, Dave McCracken and Pharrell Williams on her self-titled second album, which also becomes her US debut. That album appears in Europe in 2011 and reaches the US the following day.

Live performance and style

In performance, she uses a homemade one-woman-band setup with balloon video projections to translate her studio sound on stage. Her songs include “Sun of a Gun” and “White Nights,” which are associated with a danceable, energetic style. Her music is tagged across electronic, alternative dance, experimental, indie pop, pop and synth-pop. She is also a female vocalist associated with the Danish electronic scene.
