Odd Man Out

Odd Man Out is a straight edge hardcore group from Seattle. The band is active from 2019 and presents itself simply as “the straight edge.”

Background and style

The group begins in Olympia, Washington, in 2008 with the intention of showing that straight edge remains present in the city’s small hardcore scene. It records an early demo for discreet distribution to local record shops, including Phantom City Records and Rainy Day. Its sound is identified with hardcore and straight edge, and later material focuses on the more ferocious, extreme side of hardcore.

Releases and activity

By 2014, the band has a settled lineup and has toured in Mexico, on the east coast and on the west coast with bands including Protester, Power, Angel Du$t, Gag and Big Bite. Its releases include a self-released demo cassette, a self-titled 7-inch, a CCHC cassette and Capital City Hardcore, which contains six new songs.

Label approach and lineup practice

Odd Man Out keeps a low-profile identity, often using edge members from other bands to complete live lineups. It releases music on its own or through independent labels run by friends, including WarthogSpeak, Pop Wig and UXO.

Other bands with the same name

There are at least two other bands named Odd Man Out: a skate rock group active from 1987 to 1989 that includes pro skater Steve Caballero and appears on the soundtrack to the 1988 Powell Peralta skate video Public Domain; and a pop-punk band from Royal Palm Beach/Wellington, Florida, active since 2001.
