Obtuse

Obtuse is a Dutch grindcore and extreme metal act active since 2002. The group performs with Maddin on drums, Jurjen on guitar, Michel on bass and Wokkel on vocals. Its sound is described as grindcore meeting extreme metal, with influences including Converge, Discordance Axis, Entombed, Exodus, Immolation, Nasum and Suffocation.

Releases

The band issues a promo recording from 2002, followed by Silent Heritage in 2005 on Boars Nest Entertainment. It also appears on The Sick, The Dead, The Rotten part II in 2008 on The Spew Records. Silent Heritage is a self-released CD, and the band’s contribution to the split is recorded in November 2005 at Soundlodge Studio in Leer, Germany, with mixing completed in December 2005.

Live activity

Obtuse plays shows with acts including The Dillinger Escape Plan, Crowbar, Entombed, Pro-Pain, God Dethroned and Squash Bowels.

Context

The band is part of a release alongside Mumakil from Switzerland and Third Degree from Poland. Its contribution is presented as a pummelling and intense grind sound.
