Nurse With Wound
Nurse With Wound is a London-based UK experimental music group formed in 1978 by Steven Stapleton, John Fothergill and Heman Pathak. The project is active from 1978 to the present and is associated with avant-garde, dark ambient, experimental, industrial, noise and sound collage.
Early work and style
The group’s earliest recordings are made quickly and draw on free jazz and krautrock. They are often described as industrial music, although the group objects to that label. By 1981, Stapleton is the only original member still involved, and he later treats 1982’s Homotopy To Marie as the first proper Nurse With Wound release.
Nurse With Wound’s music draws on a wide range of styles and references, including cabaret music, nursery rhymes, John Cage, The Beach Boys, krautrock, pop music, ambient music and Captain Beefheart. Musique concrète is a major influence, reflected in Stapleton’s use of tape loops and editing. The project’s work is also shaped by dada, surrealism and absurdist humour.
Releases and collaborators
The group has more than 30 full-length releases. Many early albums are reissued by the French label Rotorelief. Nurse With Wound has a long list of collaborators, including David Tibet of Current 93. Colin Potter first works with the project on Thunder Perfect Mind, recorded at his ICR studio in 1992, and he later becomes a central part of the project alongside Stapleton.
Notable associated figure and name
The name is also associated with the so-called Nurse With Wound list, a list of obscure influences that becomes a guide to fringe music for listeners seeking experimental and unconventional recordings.
Current members
The group’s listed members are Heman Pathak, John Fothergill, Steven Stapleton, Andrew Liles, Colin Potter, David Tibet and M.S. Waldron.
