Nucleus

Nucleus is a UK jazz collective from London, active from 1969 to 1989 in its various incarnations. Led by Ian Carr, the group forms one of the pioneering British jazz-rock acts, working at the point where jazz meets rock, fusion and funk. The line-up includes, among others, Jeff Clyne, John Marshall, Karl Jenkins, Gordon Beck, Billy Kristian, Dave MacRae and Chris Spedding.

Early years and recognition

In its first year, Nucleus wins first prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival. It also releases its debut album, Elastic Rock, and performs at both the Newport Jazz Festival and the Village Gate jazz club. Carr had previously played with The Don Rendell & Ian Carr Quintet in the mid and late 1960s, and he remains a major figure in British jazz for more than four decades.

Musical style

The band begins with a jazz-based sound that includes progressive and psychedelic rock influences, then develops towards a funkier approach in the mid and late 1970s. Its genre range includes jazz, jazz fusion, jazz rock, jazz-funk and rock.

Later activity

Nucleus continues in different forms through the 1970s and 1980s, ending its active period in 1989. A one-off reunion with old and new members takes place at London’s Cargo venue in August 2005. Ian Carr dies in February 2009.
