Nourished by Time

Nourished by Time is the Baltimore-based project of singer, songwriter and producer Marcus Brown. The act’s sound combines alternative R&B and bedroom pop with New Wave, R&B and dance elements, and its lyrics often focus on existentialism, love, consumerism and the connection between consumer culture and labour.

Background

The project begins in Los Angeles at the end of 2019, when Brown lives in Koreatown. After around two years of difficulties and creative differences with a collaborator, he leaves Los Angeles, drives back across the United States to Baltimore and continues writing under the Nourished by Time name. Back in Baltimore, he works odd jobs while recovering mentally, falling in love, experiencing heartbreak and writing songs intensively.

Releases and collaborations

Nourished by Time’s first release with a label is the two-track EP Erotic Probiotic, issued in 2022 on the London independent label Scenic Route. Brown later releases the album Erotic Probiotic 2, which receives strong critical attention, including Pitchfork’s Best New Music recognition. A description of the album notes a sound that filters 1980s freestyle through a hazy, time-warped style.

Brown also expands his collaborative work outside the project. He joins Dry Cleaning on a 20-date North American tour and remixes the band’s album track “Gary Ashby”. He also appears on Yaeji’s debut album With A Hammer on XL Recordings.
