New Young Pony Club

New Young Pony Club, also known as NYPC, is an electropop and indie pop group from London, England, active since 2004. The band forms around Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence, with a line-up that includes Lou Hayter, Sarah Jones and Igor Volk. The group is associated with electronic, new rave, indie, electropop and electro styles, and its later work is also linked to synth-pop.

Formation and line-up

Bulmer and Spence begin writing together after being introduced by mutual friends. They share an interest in punk rock and dance music, and the project starts with songs intended for Bulmer to perform. Spence later takes on a broader role as the pair decide to form a full band. Hayter joins on keyboards, Volk on bass and Jones on drums, giving the group a five-member line-up. The band is described as a four-piece in some early material, but the established membership includes Bulmer, Spence, Hayter, Jones and Volk.

Name

The name comes from Bulmer’s wish to belong to a club or team at school. She first wants the shorter name Pony Club, which she describes as quirky and fun, but an Irish band already uses it. The addition of “New Young” gives the group a distinct name and reflects Bulmer’s idea of the band as a newer, younger and kinkier version of Pony Club.

Recordings and labels

The band issues two limited-edition 7-inch singles, The Get Go and Ice Cream, on Tirk Recordings before signing to the Australian label Modular Recordings for a worldwide deal. These releases mark the group’s move from a smaller indie label to a larger international one.

Later activity

By 2013, Bulmer and Spence continue as NYPC without Hayter and Jones. The group remains active after that point.
