Nesono is the electronic music project of James Copeland, a South African DJ and producer from Cape Town. Before starting Nesono, he tours internationally with his psytrance project Broken Toy, playing festivals and parties in more than 20 countries over a period of more than six years.
Nesono is described as an electro and tech project built around a South African approach to techno-influenced dance music. Its sound draws on electro, tech house, minimal and progressive styles, with heavy bass, distorted beats, and a focus on large builds and drops.
Copeland is a self-taught musician and producer. He grows up playing guitar and bass in metal and funk bands before moving into electronic music, switching to synthesizers and computer-based production. His influences include industrial, electro-clash and booty bass.
The project name comes from a Xhosa word meaning cheeky or naughty. Copeland's earlier work includes two albums and more than 70 tracks under Broken Toy. Nesono's live and DJ sets are associated with festivals and events in locations including the UK, Brazil, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan, Australia, Mexico and Canada.
