Negru is the DJ and electronic music artist Laurentiu Stan from Bucharest, Romania. He is the grandson of jazz musician Johnny Răducanu and studies piano for 12 years at George Enescu High School.
Early background
Negru is born in Bucharest in 1975. From 1990 he develops a strong interest in rap music and rap culture, which remains important to him later on. Before establishing himself as a DJ in Romania, he spends four years in Ibiza, where he attends club events at venues including Space, Pacha, DC10 and Amnesia and builds a large vinyl collection.
DJ career
He begins DJing publicly in Bucharest in May 2006 at Gossip Club, where he gains attention from local audiences. He then plays at Amsterdam Grand Cafe and at further parties at Gossip Club, after which clubs in other Romanian cities book him.
In a short period, he performs alongside international DJs and artists including Âme, Loco Dice, Martin Buttrich, Heidi, Lopazz, Pier Bucci, James Lavelle, Margaret Dygas, Alex Under, Tadeo, Serafin, Timewriter, Paco Osuna, Timo Maas, Djuma Soundsystem, Guy Gerber, Andrew Grant, Phonique, Chaim, Terry Lee Brown Jr., Toni Rios, Nutrunner, Rino Cerrone and David K. He also opens the Chemical Brothers’ show in Bucharest in front of an audience of 9,000 people.
Style and projects
Negru works mainly with house and techno, and is associated with electronic music and tech house. He is also involved in Romania’s hip hop scene through the underground project Proiectul Verde. His musical interests combine club-oriented electronic music with the rap influence he develops earlier in life.
Residency
He is resident DJ at Studio Martin in Bucharest, described as an important underground electronic music club in Romania.
