Nat Johnson And The Figureheads
Nat Johnson And The Figureheads is a Sheffield-based British five-piece led by singer, songwriter and guitarist Nat Johnson. Johnson previously performs in the folk-pop band Monkey Swallows the Universe, and after that group disbands in 2008 she works under her own name for a period before forming The Figureheads as her backing band.
Background and line-up
The band centres on Nat Johnson, with Kevin Gori, Chris Loftus, Neil Piper and Emily Gunn making up the rest of the group. Gori also performs in Monkey Swallows the Universe. Johnson is known as a female vocalist and songwriter whose work sits across indie pop, indie and folk-pop, with elements of alt-country.
Sound and recordings
Their music moves between sparse acoustic folk-pop and a fuller electric sound. The group records live radio sessions for Marc Riley, Tom Robinson and John Kennedy in 2010, reflecting their presence on specialist radio as well as in live performance.
Releases
The band releases its debut album, Roman Radio, on Damaged Goods Records in 2009. In 2011 it follows this with the EP What the Heart Pours Into, also on Damaged Goods. The band later releases I’m Across, I’m Ashore in 2012.
Related solo work
Before the Figureheads line-up takes shape, Johnson releases the single Dirty Rotten Soul as a solo artist. The single is later named Steve Lamacq’s single of the week.
