Nancy Pants

Nancy Pants is a garage pop trio from Montreal. The group features Ohara Hale on lead vocals and guitar, Adam Waito on bass and vocals, and Jeremy MacCuish on drums. Hale and Waito conceive the band in 2014 on a road trip to an indie comic book convention; both also work as illustrators and comic book makers. They recruit MacCuish and record a lo-fi five-song demo after only one band practice, using Waito’s iPhone. They release the demo online the next day and follow it with a series of DIY music videos.

The band’s recordings and performances build around a spontaneous approach to songwriting and recording. Their music combines rough, direct pop structures with garage rock, punk energy, and a lo-fi aesthetic. It also draws on teenage 1960s garage pop and 1990s punk, with Hale’s vocal style set against MacCuish’s heavy drumming and Waito’s distorted bass.

Their debut full-length, Total Nancy Pants, is recorded at their rehearsal space and at Waito’s apartment using actual microphones. It is self-released on cassette in 2014.

Waito is also known for work with Adam & The Amethysts, Silverkeys and Miracle Fortress, while MacCuish plays with Parlovr.
