Mykki Blanco is a US rapper, poet and activist from Orange County, born in 1986. They are associated with electronic and hip hop, and release music on Dogfood Music Group.

Career

Mykki Blanco begins as a video art project, with the artist first presenting a teenage female character inspired by Lil Kim’s “Kimmy Blanco” alter ego. The project appears in social media vlogs and raps before developing into a wider vehicle for self-definition and artistic identity.

One of the earliest tracks released under the Mykki Blanco name is “Wavvy” in 2012. From there, the project becomes known for pushing hip hop into experimental territory, combining noise and other experimental elements with club and trap sounds.

Style and significance

Blanco becomes widely recognised as an early figure in queer rap. Their work also sits against a broader history of hip hop shaped by misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, and their output is described as steadily widening beyond fixed genre categories.

Later work and collaborators

By early 2021, Mykki Blanco is signed to Transgressive Records in London. This period introduces a more genre-spanning direction, and the music reflects a more considered approach shaped by experience and maturity.

Blanco works with executive producer FaltyDL and a wide range of collaborators, and has two albums completed and ready.

Mykki Blanco is non-binary and uses any pronouns.
