My Silent Wake

My Silent Wake are a death-doom metal group from Weston-super-Mare, active since 2005. Their music is described as gothic death/doom metal with broader influences, drawing especially on early Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Trouble, Celtic Frost and Black Sabbath. They are also tagged as death metal and gothic metal.

Style and themes

The band combines heavy doom and death metal elements with a gothic tone. Their lyrics often deal with faith and loss of faith, but in personal and broader terms rather than direct Christian imagery. Although they are sometimes linked to the Christian metal scene because Ian Arkley played in Seventh Angel, the band does not consider itself a Christian group. Members within the band hold different beliefs, including atheism, and later lyrics reflect that variety.

Listeners familiar with Ian Arkley’s other projects, or with early Anathema, are identified as likely to find common ground with My Silent Wake’s sound. The band’s influences point to a mixture of doom metal, death metal and classic heavy metal.
