My Baby

My Baby is a group with roots in Amsterdam, formed in 2012 by former members of the Amsterdam soul band The Souldiers. The band’s line-up consists of Cato van Dijck on lead vocals, bass and violin, her brother Joost van Dijck on drums, and Daniel “Dafreez” Johnston on guitar. Their sound combines blues, country and funk, and they are also associated with soul and blues rock.

Background and early recognition

In the early years, the band is discovered by the PR manager of bassist Larry Graham, known for his work with Sly and the Family Stone, Graham Central Station and Prince. Larry Graham performs with the group during his Dutch tour in 2012. My Baby also tour and perform internationally, including in Eastern Europe, South Africa and New Zealand.

Recordings and releases

Their debut album, My Baby Loves Voodoo!, is released in 2013 on Embrace Recordings, a jazz label. The follow-up album, Shamanaid, appears in 2015. In the same year, they issue the EP Remedy II, based on a re-recording of the song “Remedy”. Their third album, Prehistoric Rhythm, is completed by the end of 2016 and follows in 2017, with “Love Dance” issued as the first single. Later releases include Mounaiki ~ By the Bright of Night in 2018, Live! in 2019, Sake sake sake in 2022, and Echo in 2025.

Live work and festivals

My Baby support Seasick Steve on fourteen opening shows during his Sonic Soul Tour in the United Kingdom. They also appear at a number of festivals, including Freak Valley, Noorderslag, Zwarte Cross, Lowlands, Down The Rabbit Hole, Paaspop and Glastonbury 2016, where they play six times.
