Muntu Valdo

Muntu Valdo is a Cameroonian jazz guitarist, harmonicist and singer from Douala. Born in 1977, he works as a multi-instrumentalist and is associated with acoustic guitar, blues and world music, drawing on African musical traditions and a blues base.

Career and style

He grows up in Cameroon and later France, and his music combines these influences with a modern approach and a strong emphasis on technique. He uses loops and samples to build layered arrangements, and his playing spans harmonica, guitar, balafon, bass, percussion and ngombi, alongside vocals.

Collaborations and performances

Valdo plays with a number of major African musicians, including Ali Farka Touré, Manu Dibango, Richard Bona and Tony Allen. He also tours with Staff Benda Bilili, the Congolese group.

Recordings

His debut album, Gods & Devils, receives praise for its energetic blend of joy and passion.
