Mungo's Hi Fi

Mungo's Hi Fi is a dub reggae, dancehall and dubstep soundsystem based in Glasgow. The group begins releasing music in 2001 and works in the original roots tradition, with recordings made in a purpose-built studio powered by the same large, homebuilt sound system used for its live performances.

Early releases and label work

The group debuts with Wickedness featuring Brother Culture on London label Dubhead. That release brings the project to wider attention in the dub scene and receives heavy support from Jah Shaka and Iration Steppas. After three releases on Dubhead, including the 2002 album Mungo's Hi Fi meets Brother Culture, the group sets up its own label, Scotch Bonnet Records, in 2005.

In 2008, Mungo's Hi Fi releases its first full-length album on Scotch Bonnet, Mungo's Hi Fi – Sound System Champions, an ensemble record featuring MCs and singers including Ranking Joe, Top Cat, Tippa Irie and Kenny Knots. The group also starts the dubstep imprint Scrub A Dub; its first release is the track Babylon, which appears on vinyl in January 2009 after featuring on Appleblim’s Dubstep Allstars: Vol.06 in late 2008.

Recognition and influences

Mungo's Hi Fi receives support from DJs including Mr Scruff, Andy Weatherall and John Peel. Mr Scruff includes the track Ing on his 2005 Keep it Solid Steel mix, released on Ninja Tune.

Live work

The group holds a monthly residency at the Glasgow School of Art and runs the weekly Dub and Grub nights. It also tours regularly across Europe and the festival circuit.
