Mrs. Magician is a United States garage rock group from San Diego. The band includes Jacob Turnbloom, Cory Stier, Jordan Clark, Evan Ehrich and Tommy Garcia.

Style and sound

The group works in dismal pop, garage rock and surf-influenced territory, with concise punk songs shaped by the large-scale melodies of 1960s pop and rock and roll and the song structures of 1970s and 1980s power pop. Their sound combines dry, heavy rhythm with guitar tones marked by fuzz and a washed-out, tropical feel. The group also uses lo-fi elements and surf rock textures.

Releases

Mrs. Magician releases its album Bermuda on Swami Records as its second full-length. It follows the band’s 2012 debut album Strange Heaven. Bermuda presents more non-linear lyrics than that earlier record and keeps the group’s self-deprecating humour while moving away from songs focused mainly on personal relationships.

Themes and collaborators

The lyrics on Bermuda deal with alienation and melodrama, as well as gentrification, addiction, religion and modern conspiracy theories. The album is produced by Swami John Reis, known for work with Drive Like Jehu, Rocket From the Crypt and Hot Snakes.
