Mousse T.
Mousse T. is the recording name of Mustafa Gündoğdu, a German electronic musician and producer from Hagen. His work spans house, dance, pop and electronic music, with strong connections to jazz and soul. He also works under and with projects including Peppermint Jam Allstars, Booom!, F.O.M. and Afropeans.
Early career and label work
He starts out playing keyboards in Fun Key B, where he develops an interest in synth-pop and funk-influenced sounds. He also builds a solo career at the same time, opening his own recording studio and DJing on the club scene in Hannover. In 1993, he launches Peppermint Jam, a label associated with uplifting house music and melodic acid jazz.
Productions, remixes and collaborations
His catalogue includes original productions, remixes and writing and production work for other artists. Among the musicians he works with are Roy Ayers, Byron Stingily, Andreya Triana, Bootsy Collins and Randy Crawford. He later continues to release his own productions and remains active as a DJ and producer.
Notable releases and chart success
Mousse T. becomes widely known in the late 1990s through tracks such as “Horny” and Tom Jones’s “Sex Bomb”. His garage house track “Horny ’98”, featuring Hot ’n’ Juicy on vocals, reaches the top of the Billboard dance charts. His first album, Gourmet de Funk, appears in 2001 and is notable for focusing on jazz rather than house. In 2004, “Is It ’Cos I’m Cool?” enters the UK singles chart and appears on his second album, All Nite Madness.
Awards and later work
His work brings commercial recognition, including an Ivor Novello Award and a Grammy Award nomination. He has released three studio albums, with Where Is The Love among them, and he also produces film soundtracks for German titles. He appears as a judge on DSDS, the German version of Got Talent.
DJing and performances
He continues to DJ internationally and holds residencies at Glitterbox parties. He performs with a live band at venues and festivals including Hï Ibiza, Viper Room Los Angeles, Cavo Paradiso Mykonos, Amnesia Ibiza, Pacha Ibiza, Creamfields, Cocoon Club Frankfurt, Loveparade, Rex Club Paris and Montreux Jazz Festival.
