Morgan Heritage
Morgan Heritage is a reggae group from Brooklyn, Jamaica, active from 1994 to the present. It is made up of Peetah Morgan, Mojo Morgan, Gramps Morgan, Nakamyah Morgan and Una Morgan.
Background
The group forms around five children of the reggae artist Denroy Morgan. They grow up in their father’s music studio in the United States and first appear at Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica as a larger family line-up that includes eight of the children. They later receive the nickname “reggae royalty”.
After signing with MCA, they release their debut album, Miracles, in 1994. The group later criticises that album for being too pop-oriented. A year later, the family moves to Jamaica, and three members leave the group.
Albums and recordings
In Jamaica, Morgan Heritage works with producers Bobby Dixon and Lloyd James. This leads to the release of Protect Us Jah in 1997, followed by One Calling in 1998 and Don't Haffi Dread in 1999. The last of these is described as more spiritually focused.
The group also releases two albums under the name “The Morgan Heritage Family and Friends”, as well as Live in Europe!, recorded during its 2000 tour. Its 2001 album More Teachings... is followed by another European tour. The sixth studio album, Three in One, appears in 2003, and Full Circle follows in 2005.
Live releases and collaborations
Morgan Heritage also issues two DVDs, Live In London and Live Over Europe 2003. The group is said to work with many reggae artists and DJs, including Capleton, Luciano, Gentleman and Beres Hammond.
A sibling act, L.M.S., tours with Morgan Heritage and is described as more hip-hop influenced. Denroy Morgan is also part of the wider family connection around the group.
