Morgan Ågren is a Swedish drummer from Umeå, born in 1967. He is associated with progressive rock, experimental and electronic music, and works with the progressive rock group Kaipa.

Early work and collaborations

Ågren begins performing publicly at the age of seven and later joins forces with Mats Öberg in 1981. The pair form Zappsteetoot in 1984, a group known internationally for performing Frank Zappa’s music. In 1988, Ågren and Öberg are invited to guest at Zappa’s Stockholm concert. Zappa then invites Ågren to the United States for further projects.

Those projects include the Grammy Award-winning Zappa’s Universe from 1994, which features Steve Vai, and a sold-out New York performance of Zappa’s classical programme at Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series in Avery Fisher Hall. Ågren also shares drum duties with Terry Bozzio on Dweezil Zappa’s album Shampoohorn.

Bands and recordings

Ågren tours Europe with Glenn Hughes’s band in 1996 and later tours Japan in 1997. He also records with Fläskkvartetten, also known as The Pork Quartet, including the Grammy Award-winning Goodbye Sweden and Flow, which wins Best Album in 1993. His other group work includes Mats/Morgan Band, and he is listed with Box, Freddie Wadling & Co, and Blixt. He also plays with Kaipa.

Solo and label work

In 1996, Ågren founds his own label, Ultimate Audio Entertainment, which is dedicated to releasing new music. He also appears on Fredrik Thordendal’s solo album Sol Niger Within, released in 1997, a recording that gains him recognition among fans of heavy and extreme music.

Film work

In May 1997, Ågren features in a Swedish Film Institute project and makes his debut in cinemas and at international film festivals through the 35mm short film Lullaby for Lost Souls. The film presents him in a free-form drum performance.
