Moon Duo
Moon Duo is a San Francisco-based US psychedelic rock group active since 2009. The act forms around Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada, and its lineup also includes John Jeffrey. Its sound is centred on guitar, keyboards and vocals, with a focus on neo-psychedelia, psychedelic rock, rock and space rock.
Background and influences
The group begins with an interest in the pairing of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, and also draws on a range of related artists and projects including Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide and Cluster. Moon Duo uses sparse instrumentation to set space against structure, creating a dense and repetitive style of psych rock.
Recordings
Moon Duo first appears on a debut 12-inch single issued on Sick Thirst. It then releases the Killing Time EP on Sacred Bones, followed by the Escape LP on Woodsist. Its first full-length album, Mazes, comes out on Sacred Bones and Souterrain Transmissions in 2011.
