Monkey Mafia is an Essex-based British electronic group active since 1995, made up of Jon Carter, Dan Peppe and Steve White. It begins as a 1990s alias for Jon Carter’s breakbeat productions, distinct from his house-oriented Junior Cartier project.

Style and background

The act is associated with big beat and dancehall, and is often placed alongside the wider big beat scene of the period. Its sound, however, is described as darker and more dub-influenced than the lighter, party-focused side often linked with that movement.
