Minsk
Minsk is a doom metal and post-metal group from Peoria, Illinois, formed in 2002 and active since then. Their sound combines doom metal, post-hardcore, sludge metal, post-rock and psychedelic rock, and they describe it as “psychedelic metal”.
Style and themes
Their songs often begin in a slow, simple way and develop into something heavier and more complex. The music draws on sludge metal, doom metal, hardcore punk, ambient music and noise, using tribal drum patterns, layers of synthesizers and keyboards, and echoing vocals. Their lyrics and wider aesthetic often return to the theme of survival through suffering.
The band takes its name from Minsk, the capital of Belarus, with a backstory that links the name to a city repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt.
Albums and touring
Minsk’s first full-length album, Out of a Center Which Is Neither Dead nor Alive, is recorded in late 2004 and released in 2005 on At a Loss Recordings. Before that release, the band appears at South by Southwest and Emissions from the Monolith. During the recording, bassist Drew McDowell leaves, and Sanford Parker joins as full-time bassist while also continuing as the album’s producer. Parker, already known as the guitarist for Buried at Sea, remains a member of Minsk.
After Parker joins, founding guitarist Dustin Addis leaves, and the band records the album as a four-piece, with Cristopher Bennett handling all guitar parts. To support the release, Minsk tours nationally with bands including Brutal Truth, High on Fire, Boris, Sunn O))) and Pig Destroyer.
Their second album, The Ritual Fires of Abandonment, is released on Relapse Records in 2007. It follows strong reception for the debut, and the band tours the United States in support of it, again appearing at South by Southwest and Emissions from the Monolith as well as playing other east coast dates.
The third LP, With Echoes in the Movement of Stone, is released on Relapse Records in 2009.
Later activity
In 2011 the band announces that it is ending, but it reforms several months later in 2012.
