Millions

Millions are a Brisbane indie rock group whose sound is also associated with garage-pop, noise rock, noise, chaotic hardcore, drone and noisecore. The band establishes its reputation through live shows and a catalogue of recorded songs that attract radio play and attention from UK music press.

Origin and activity

Millions form in Brisbane and operate as a four-piece. They start gaining notice soon after forming, when triple j Unearthed picks them to open Splendour In The Grass at Woodford in 2011. Their early profile grows through repeated national touring and festival appearances.

Live work and touring

The band shares stages with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Grates and Bluejuice, and supports San Cisco, Oh Mercy, Last Dinosaurs and Gold Fields on national tours. They also perform at Brisbane’s No Years event, and secure slots at the Big Day Out and Falls festivals. They later appear on the Falls Festival tour over new year with acts including Beach House and The Flaming Lips, and complete a sold-out Australian tour with San Cisco.

Recordings

Millions’ early tracks include “Those Girls”, “Guru” and “Slow Burner”, which receive play on triple j and public radio and attract attention from NME. Their debut EP, Nine Lives, Six Degrees, leads to their first headline tour in July 2012. A second EP, Cruel, follows, led by the single “Nineteen”. The EP is produced by Malcolm Besley of Northeast Party House and mixed by Gordon Raphael, who is associated with The Strokes’ Is This It. “Nineteen” reaches high rotation on triple j and wins Channel [V]’s Ripe Clip Of The Week.

Reception

Commentary around the band describes them as stylish and loud, with a mature and defined sound, and Gordon Raphael praises their big, imaginative approach to production and songwriting. They are also referred to as “the best prom band in Australia.”
