Million Dead

Million Dead are a London-based punk and hardcore band active from 2000 to 2005, with a later full-band return in 2025 for festival and tour dates. The group forms in late 2000 through mutual friends and work connections, with Frank Turner and Ben Dawson already playing together in Kneejerk before Million Dead begins. The line-up includes Turner on vocals, Julia Ruzicka on bass, Cameron Dean on guitar, and Dawson on drums, with Tom Fowler later replacing Dean on guitar.

Style and lyrics

The band’s sound combines punk, post-hardcore, hardcore and emo elements. Cameron Dean’s guitar parts and Julia Ruzicka’s bass work provide the backdrop for Turner’s direct lyrics, which focus on UK politics and wider social issues. The band is known for moving between dense, intricate arrangements and a more straightforward punk approach.

Albums and releases

Million Dead release two studio albums: A Song to Ruin in 2003 and Harmony No Harmony in 2005. The first album receives critical acclaim and is later reissued in a deluxe edition in 2009, with bonus tracks and a DVD that includes Dean’s final show, the band’s last London performance and promotional videos. The second album follows Dean’s departure and shows a shift in the band’s sound, but it does not match the reception of the debut.

Break-up and later activity

After Harmony No Harmony, the band ends following internal personal disagreements, with a farewell UK tour taking place in September 2005. Turner goes on to pursue solo work in an alternative folk direction, while Ruzicka and Fowler move from London to Brighton and form another band together. Dawson continues with Palehorse and also plays with Armed Response Unit, Mothlite, Queen of Swords, Mongol Horde and other acts as a session and live drummer. Turner later forms Mongol Horde with Dawson, and Ruzicka also plays bass for Future of the Left and releases a solo album under the name this becomes us.

2025 return

The band reunites in 2025 for festival appearances and a winter tour, performing as a full five-piece. They state that the return is driven by the fact that they have forgotten why they hated each other, and after the tour they say that the band ends again.
