Mild High Club
Mild High Club is a psychedelic pop group based in Chicago and Los Angeles and active since 2013. It is led by Alexander Brettin, a musician originally from Chicago who is based in Los Angeles. The group also includes Mat Roberts.
Style and sound
The project’s music is associated with psychedelic pop, bedroom pop, dream pop, hypnagogic pop, indie pop, jazz fusion and jazz pop. It also sits within psychedelic, neo-psychedelia, lo-fi and jazz-tagged contexts. Its sound is described as woozy and laid-back, with close attention to detail.
Formation and early work
Brettin begins working on Mild High Club material in 2012 on his own, using guitars, keyboards, computers and a 4-track recorder. During this period he moves between Chicago, Baltimore and Los Angeles. He also meets musicians across the United States who later contribute to recordings and play with the group at live shows.
Recordings and label activity
Mild High Club signs to Stones Throw at the end of 2014. A 7-inch single called “Windowpane” follows in early 2015. The group’s debut album, Timeline, then appears on Stones Throw’s Circle Star Records imprint.
