Milagres

Milagres is a Brooklyn indie group active from 2010, described here as a five-piece centred on singer and songwriter Kyle Scott Wilson. The band forms in Brooklyn, United States, and its material is associated with shoegaze, indie and folk influences, with a melancholy tone.

Formation and lineup

Wilson begins the project after a period away from New York, where he leaves the city and the band behind while seeking space in remote British Columbia. A climbing accident there leaves him bedridden for months with a back injury, and during recovery he starts writing songs again and decides to return to Milagres. Back in New York, he builds a new line-up with Fraser McCulloch on bass, backing vocals and keys, Eric Schwortz on guitar, backing vocals and percussion, Chris Brazee on piano and keys, and Steven Leventhal on drums and percussion.

Recording and style

The material that emerges from these demos becomes the band’s first album, Glowing Mouth. It is noted for piano-led melodies and high falsetto vocals, with comparisons drawn to artists as different as Grizzly Bear and Prince because of its broad musical range. The songs include the title track “Glowing Mouth”, the keyboard-driven “Here To Stay”, and the tracks “Gentle Beast” and “Gone”, which are described as lingering, story-led songs with strong choruses and melody.

Release and label

Glowing Mouth is issued by Kill Rock Stars, and the label’s Portia Sabin signs the band without having seen them perform live, later saying the group proves even stronger on stage than on record.
