MikkiM is a Prague-based musician, producer and DJ. He works in styles that combine electronic music with ska, reggae, dub, Balkan and punk elements, and his output ranges from chilled dub beats to jungle, drum and bass and hardtekno.

Career

He releases full-length albums, vinyl records and digital singles. The input describes two full-length CDs, seven vinyl releases and many digital singles. He performs both as a DJ and as a live act, either on his own or with MCs and instrumentalists. His live setups use a Korg groovebox, controllers, a mixer and a laptop, and he also works with a live band formed around drums, guitar, percussion and electronic backing.

He has played in most European countries and in South America, and sometimes appears as a headliner at festivals or club nights. He also serves as a main support live act for tours by Dreadzone and Zion Train, performing with MC Turner.

Record labels and projects

In 2012 he starts Big Bong Records, a label focused on groovy electronic and acoustic music. He also runs io.lab with producer Merak, and oversees its Offbeat Division, which specialises in hard electronic beats combined with global and world music.

Outside his own releases, he works with artists from around the world, including several well-known figures from the music scene. He also remixes tracks and makes new versions of music he likes, drawing on samples from acts such as The Clash, The Specials and Madness.

Albums and recognition

His second full-length album, Offbeat Rhapsody, is based on recordings he makes in Kingston, Jamaica, where he spends a month recording local artists in 2011. The album is released in 2012 and wins an Anděl award for album of the year in the ska and reggae category. It also receives a major Czech award described as the equivalent of a Czech Grammy.

Other work

He is also associated with Prague’s Cross Club, where he is one of the initial members and works as a sound engineer. His studio is located a couple of floors above the club.

As a DJ, he plays reggae, dub, breakbeat, jungle, drum and bass, hardtekno, raggatek, electro, electroswing and Balkan music. He also uses the term “skatek” for a style he invents, combining pumping techno at 150 to 180 bpm with offbeat ska influences and live instrumental and vocal samples.
