Mike Milligan
Mike Milligan is a Toronto-based bassist who works with a range of local jazz musicians and touring artists. He performs both electric bass and double bass, and also teaches privately in Toronto, covering bass and jazz improvisation.
Career
Milligan performs with a wide list of musicians in jazz and related settings. He has played with David Liebman, Chet Baker, Ritchie Beirach, Billy Kilson, Adam Nussbaum, David Binney, Don Thompson, Claude Ranger, Holly Cole and Sonny Greenwich.
He also appears as part of the house band at the Ottawa Jazz Festival in 2005 and 2006, where he performs with Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin and Jeff Ballard. He tours extensively across Canada and Europe with the Shuffle Demons.
Recording and projects
In 1997, Milligan releases a solo bass CD titled Solo Flights. He also performs in the trio Life on Mars, which wins first prize at an international competition at the Vienne Jazz Festival in France.
His other current work includes a trio with David Braid and Joel Haynes, a solo bass project, and sideman roles with the Dylan Hemming Trio, the Richard Underhill Quartet, the James Brown Trio and Laura Hubert.
Training
Milligan studies double bass with Dave Holland and George Mraz, composition with Roddy Elias, and jazz performance at Humber College.
