MidiMidis are a British group made up of two brothers-in-law who create 8-bit and midi-based music with guitars, vocals and analogue recording methods. They work with retro equipment including an Amstrad CPC 464, a Game Boy, a ZX Spectrum, a Game Gear, an unreliable laptop, a battered PSP and two broken guitars.

Style and influences

Their sound combines minimalist, fuzzy 8-bit textures with feedback-heavy guitar work and angular references drawn from punk, new wave and electronic music. Their listening and stylistic influences include Gary Numan, Bauhaus, Nirvana, The Velvet Underground, Television, Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk and the Human League.

Recording and performance

They follow a DIY approach, often playing guerrilla shows at house parties and other informal locations. For recording, they use reel-to-reel 8-track analogue tape for guitars, bass and vocals, then mix the midi material and overall sound digitally.

Releases and media coverage

Their debut demo, note-to-self, appears on iTunes and also has a small run of hand-made physical copies. After that release, they receive a national feature in PlayStation World, becoming the first DIY band to appear in a games magazine. They also achieve a top score on BBC Berkshire’s The Session demo panel and receive airplay on XFM, BBC Radio 1 with Huw Stephens, and BBC Radio 6 Music with Tom Robinson.

Later work

They are in the studio working on a full-length EP called Mayuko, which includes tracks produced by Mr Fogg and Tom Bellamy of Losers, Rhysmÿx and ex-Cooper Temple Clause, along with an exclusive remix of nemesis.
