M(h)aol

M(h)aol is a Dublin, Ireland-based group active since 2015. Its line-up includes Roísín Nic Ghearailt, Zoe Greenaway, Jamie Hyland, Constance Keane and Sean Nolan. The band works in indie rock, post-punk and punk, and is also associated with noise rock, industrial and crank wave.

Formation and line-up

The band forms in Dublin and presents itself as a punk group with a strong political edge. Early line-up details include Nic Ghearailt on vocals, Keane on drums, Nolan on guitar and Greenaway on bass guitar; the current membership also includes Jamie Hyland.

Early release

Shortly after forming, M(h)aol releases the single Clementine in 2015. The song draws on a letter to The Times written by Clementine Churchill in response to anti-suffrage campaigners. It features a guest appearance by Dara Kiely of Girl Band and attracts attention for both its subject matter and its unusual sound.

The band’s lyrics and public identity centre on feminist ideas and animal rights, which are key parts of its stated outlook.
